About Avlabari

Avlabari, located on the left bank of the river Mtkvari, is one of the oldest and the most picturesque neighbourhoods of Historic Tbilisi.  It is home to medieval city walls, the magnificent Metekhi Church and historic houses overhanging the river on the cliffs of Metekhi. In the Middle Ages this area was called Isani. The toponym "Avlabari" appeared for the first time in the 14th century and it referred to the area outside the walls of Isani Fortress. In later times, Isani and Avlabari became synonymous, and both referred to the district as a whole — with its fortress and the settlement outside the fortress. From the 1820s onwards, Avlabari was gradually modernised, although until the beginning of the 20th century it had an "Asian" appearance with narrow winding streets, one- and two-story houses and shops. A large part of the population were engaged in small trading.Despite the fact that new constructions were added to the area during the Soviet period and in recent decades, much of Avlabari still retains its oriental appearance with little grocery and wine shops; dozens of traditional residential houses with carved wooden balconies opening onto the street have survived to this day.The neighbourhood has two large green areas: one is around the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the second, named Rike park, is next to Metekhi church, where one can feel peace and tranquility.
