Silay, officially known as the City of Silay, is a third-class component city situated in Negros Occidental, Philippines, with a population of 130,478 according to the 2020 census. Part of the Metro Bacolod area, it is home to a thriving commercial and fishing port and the modern Bacolod–Silay International Airport.This city is fondly referred to as the "Paris of Negros" due to its rich cultural heritage, vibrant arts scene, and a remarkable collection of well-preserved heritage houses. Over thirty heritage houses have been recognized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines as part of the Silay National Historical Landmark. The city celebrates its 58th charter anniversary, its name derived from the Kansilay tree, the city's official tree, originating from an age-old local legend.Silay has a rich history dating back to its initial settlement in 1565, initially known as "Carobcob" and later referred to as "Calubcub", "Caracol", and "Caraco". The city's history is steeped in tales of bravery, resilience, and cultural evolution.It became a recognized town in 1760 and a chartered city on June 12, 1957, renowned for its vibrant arts, cultural heritage, and ecotourism. Silay hosts the annual Hugyaw Kansilay Festival on June 12th, symbolizing its growth from a modest pueblo to a vibrant city boasting a unique dance presentation depicting the Legend of Kansilay, the story behind the city's name.
