This charming apartment is located in a heritage building in the historic neighbourhood of Batumi, just a stone’s throw away from the main Piazza.
Built in 1888 by the Sarchich family, descendants of Italian immigrants. The family arrived in Batumi in 1880-s from Genoa, bought felucca and carried drinking water from Batumi to Poti to sell.
During the chaos of World War II, the Sarchich family was exiled, leaving behind a legacy that endured through the ages. In the post-war era, the house became a haven for notable figures like Akvirine Surguladze, beloved of Galaktion Tabidze, Georgia’s prominent writer.
The Archivist Grisha Paniantsi lived in the dome of the building, exactly where the apartment is positioned.
As you step through the private entrance, you will find yourself in a space that seamlessly blends history with modern comfort. Recently renovated apartment boasts two spacious living rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a large bedroom, a cozy nook, and a bathroom. A unique feature is the inside terrace, offering a tranquil retreat within the bustling city.
Just a short stroll away lie iconic landmarks such as the Ali & Nino Statue, Alphabet Tower, and Ferris wheel, each weaving their own tale into Batumi’s colorful narrative. And standing sentinel nearby is one of the city’s oldest magnolia trees, planted by the renowned marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky in 1890, marking a chapter of rebirth and renewal in this historic district.
Batumi, a Black Sea resort and port city, is the capital of the Georgian republic of Adjara. Batumi Boulevard encompasses a waterfront promenade with a park and beach. The 130m-high Alphabetic Tower, adorned with Georgian script, has a seaside observation deck. The old town district is lined with renovated 19th-century buildings. The owner of the apartment is Tamar, who has a very interesting family story connected with the house and its history. Archivist Grigol (Grisha) Piniantsi (Georgian by mother, Armenian by father), who lives in the dome of this house with his wife, as well as Archivist Fania Kokuashvili (ethnically Jewish), were Tamar's grandparents. The builders of the house, Sarchichis were grandfather's godfathers. Tamari's grandfather ran away with his family due to the genocide in Turkey and took refuge in Batumi. After that, he already became a war veteran worked in the archive for 60 years, and had the title of Honorary Worker of Georgian Culture. Grisha Piniantsi and Fania Kokuashvili lived in the dome of this house for 65 years and are still referred to as the local colour people of the city.
